Art and Design

Art is woven into the fabric of Bryanston. Here, imagination knows no bounds and creativity lies at the heart of everything we do.

We believe that everyone is inherently an artist and creativity serves as the brushstroke of innovation, the celebration of expression and the spark igniting passions.

Our art studios are living galleries evolving all year round. They provide an imaginative environment for artistic exploration and collaboration. Within these vibrant spaces pupils are pioneering, embrace challenges and take risks. They are passionate about art and constantly demonstrate artistic originality.

Self-expression and individuality

All pupils regardless of their experience and ambitions can study art. Our focus extends beyond grades; it is about nurturing self-expression and unlocking imagination.

With a variety of tools, materials and facilities available in the art department, we encourage pupils to explore and imagine with confidence and ambition. Through classwork, extra-curricular activities and exhibitions, pupils challenge themselves in both their technical and creative abilities.

We proudly display as much pupil work as possible, showcasing the creativity and individuality that we inspire in everyone who comes to Bryanston.

‘Why is a raven like a writing desk?’

We ask, what does the world look like to you? What is your perspective on this? Art projects involve complex problem-solving, where pupils learn to evaluate visual cues, decipher meanings and make informed judgments.

At Bryanston, we help pupils develop their own opinions and to see art through their own eyes.  Art cultivates pupils’ capacity for reflection and self-evaluation, enhancing their ability to self-critique, adapt and continuously grow as artists.

Art beyond the classroom

Art isn’t just observed; it’s experienced. At Bryanston, art permeates life far beyond the classroom, through trips, guest speakers and access to modern studios.

Distinguished artists and Bryanston alumni frequently visit our department to share their work and lead practical workshops, enriching our pupils’ learning experience.

Studios are accessible outside of class hours, allowing our young artists to refine their skills in their own time.

The art curriculum at Bryanston

Our comprehensive art curriculum encompasses a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, photography and digital art, providing pupils with opportunities to explore and develop their artistic interests.

  • Introduction to art

Pupils can immerse themselves in the vibrant world of art from their first day at Bryanston. All Year 9 (D) pupils start an artistic journey, laying the groundwork for boundless creative expression. As the year progresses, they embrace new perspectives, captivating projects and explore various materials.

Pupils are empowered and equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence to make informed choices for their GCSEs and unleash their creative potential.

  • GCSE Art and Design

Pupils can continue their artistic adventure with GCSE art and can choose between Fine Art or 3D design. They participate in workshops, exploring a wide range of themes before embarking on their independent project.

Pupils continue refining their skills and bringing their vision to life in a portfolio of work. They complete an externally set assignment during the end of April exam.

  • A Level Art and Design

A Level Art and Design enables pupils to delve deep into personal investigation projects and showcase their artistic voice. Pupils continue crafting art portfolios that will become their passports to a colourful future beyond Bryanston.

A Level artists complete a three-month externally set assignment in Year 13 (A2), where they’ll push boundaries and showcase their artistic excellence.

Our dedicated staff guide pupils every step of the way, from supporting them with university applications to guiding them on the right artistic future pathway.

  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Art

The Art IB merges A Level and IB, igniting ideas for personal projects and introducing diverse skills and techniques.

Pupils study three areas, beginning with Process Portfolio, then the Comparative Study where they contextualise their work, and finishing with the Exhibition, a triumphant showcase of their growth and achievements.
