French

Studying French opens doors to a world of culture and communication. It is a language spoken by over 300 million people across five continents and is the second most widely learned foreign language worldwide.

Our pupils develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, enabling them to connect with the global French speaking community.

Pupils not only learn to speak French with eloquence but also how to dissect and analyse the structure of Romance languages, opening the door to faster learning of other languages in this group.

Our French curriculum

Our GCSE, A Level, and IB French curriculum covers topics from literature and art to current affairs and social issues.

We focus on developing linguistic skills, cultural understanding, and critical thinking abilities, encouraging pupils to explore French language and culture in depth.

Through interactive lessons, authentic resources, and stimulating discussions, pupils gain the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in their examinations and beyond.

Beyond the classroom

Our French department offers a range of cultural enrichment opportunities and we are always on the lookout for interesting and engaging ways to bring the French language to life.

Recent initiatives have included trips to French restaurants, pétanque tournaments, a performance from a French theatre company, and a trip to a French musical in London.

Sixth Form pupils regularly and enthusiastically take the lead in the running of their own French language clubs which include activities such as board games, cooking challenges and quizzes all delivered through the medium of French.

Year 12 (A3) pupils assist in the coaching of younger pupils as well as delivering a lesson to prep school pupils. The whole school celebrates the Fête de la musique on the 21st of June each year with French music being performed and played during a themed dinner provided by our incredible catering team.

Beyond Bryanston

We are proud that we have a number of French pupils who have gone on to study at Oxbridge as well as other Russell Group universities while others have chosen to live in French-speaking countries for study or work and now, a growing number of pupils have chosen France as their base for their higher education studies.

Since French opens a world of possibilities for pupils, some continue their language studies, focusing on French at universities worldwide, often combining the language with another discipline such as politics or economics.
