Geography

The world is changing at such a pace that we cannot possibly hope to understand the future that we will be preparing our pupils for. However, we can provide them with the knowledge of how and why such changes take place in both our human and natural world and we can develop a curiosity that will set them up for a future of lifelong learning.

Our approach to Geography encourages pupils to question the world around them, to challenge the information that they are presented with and consider the views that are shared with them.

Through an exploration of the intricate connections between natural systems, human activities, and the environment, our aim is to provide pupils with the foundations needed to form their own, educated perspectives.

Beyond the classroom

Our approach aims to immerse pupils in real-world experiences through fieldwork to bridge the gap between theory and practice. These opportunities help to instil a lifelong interest in Geography and equip pupils with fundamental real-world skills.

We are incredibly fortunate that our school campus provides exceptional opportunities for outdoor study. Located in the Dorset countryside we are well positioned to explore a range of geographical environments and run fieldtrips for all year groups to investigate river and coastal processes, changing urban and rural environments, and atmospheric processes.

There are also international adventures, including a visit to Morocco, where pupils study the effects of urban change and inequality, globalisation and changing climates.

Our Geography department also offers a range of extra-curricular activities. We run discussion groups where pupils are able to explore their areas of interest in greater detail and also participate in national geography events and competitions, including entering pupils into the Young Geographer of the Year and local quiz competitions.

Geography curriculum

Geography flourishes at Bryanston. Over half of Year 10 and Year 11 groups choose it as a GCSE option and it continues to be one of the most popular choices at A Level.

  • Introduction to Geography

In Year 9 (D) we have developed our own curriculum that focuses on introducing pupils to a wide range of current geographical challenges across the human and natural world, including superpower relations, extreme weather and international development.

This course builds the foundations for GCSE study through a focus on the skills that will be needed and aims to instil a curiosity that will lead to a love of the subject.

  • GCSE Geography

At GCSE we follow the Pearson Edexcel International course which covers both human and physical geography, enabling pupils to explore the connections between natural systems and human activities.

The curriculum includes the study of coasts, natural hazards, population, rural environments, economic development, and global interdependence.

Pupils develop critical thinking, data analysis skills and a strong appreciation for the social, economic and environmental challenges the world faces.

  • A Level Geography

At A Level we follow the CAIE course which enables pupils to explore new ideas and develop a more comprehensive understanding of some of the critical challenges facing humanity today.

Pupils investigate a range of topics including, but not limited to, rivers, climate, hazards, population dynamics, urbanisation, globalisation, and sustainability. A Level Geography requires pupils to analyse a range of data sources to evaluate complex geographical issues and understand the relationship between physical and human processes.

Alice Bryanston School

Beyond Bryanston

Many of our pupils continue to study Geography at Russell Group universities and Oxbridge after leaving Bryanston.

Others pursue related degree subjects, including geology, marine geography, earth sciences, environmental studies, land management and planning.

In recent years our Geography graduates have gone on to pursue careers in areas such as sustainability, disease research, mineral exploration, political lobbying and some have even set up their own charitable organisations.

Our Geography teachers

Our Geography teachers ensure pupils leave Bryanston with awareness of and motivation for facing today’s problems. The department strives to inspire and guide pupils by developing a current, relevant and meaningful curriculum.

Our staff are dedicated to delivering personalised attention, providing one-to-one support to help pupils navigate complex topics.

Kate Andrews, Head of Geography, studied for her BA (Hons) Geography at the University of Exeter and then gained her PGCE at the same institution. She continues to engage in academic research, most recently completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Mentoring.

Kate has worked in both the state and independent sectors and brings a wealth of experience from a range of schools.

The department is staffed by highly experienced teachers, many with senior roles elsewhere in the school. Whilst some hold degrees in Geography, others bring knowledge of Natural Sciences, Psychology and Sociology providing a breadth of skills and expertise to the department. Our staff also have experience working in a range of industries prior to their careers in teaching including mining, finance, elite sport and the military.

As you might expect they are widely travelled, too, and bring first-hand experience of life outside this country into the classroom.
