Art beyond the classroom

History of Art field trips take our pupils to museums, galleries and historic sites in London, Paris, Rome, Venice, and Florence. Experiencing artworks and architecture first-hand cultivates critical observation skills and deepens understanding and aesthetic appreciation.

Our pupils also benefit from diverse guest speakers, including Director of the Wallace Collection Dr Xavier Bray and photographer Simon Upton, both former Bryanston pupils.

History of Art Club

All pupils can engage in our History of Art Club, where they explore art works from across the ages, engage in research projects, and collaborate on group studies. Together pupils explore different approaches to interpreting artworks, investigating them from numerous angles.

This extra-curricular activity deepens pupils’ understanding of the evolution of art and encourages research skills.

Library

Rich History of Art resources

Our phenomenal art history library is a treasure trove of books, journals, exhibition catalogues, and digital references. The collection was significantly enhanced by a donation of around 1000 books from the family of former Dorset art teacher David Westhead.

This valuable resource, available for the use of other schools, fortifies our commitment to comprehensive art history education, research, and collaboration within our community.

Beyond Bryanston

Studying History of Art opens up numerous different pathways for our pupils. Many pursue degrees in art history or related fields at universities such as Manchester, Edinburgh, The Courtauld and Goldsmiths with a view to pursuing careers in museum curation, art conservation, auction houses or gallery management.

Skills gained also prepare pupils for art journalism, criticism, or education. History of Art equips pupils for fulfilling careers, giving them a strong foundation to thrive in the art world and beyond.

As one of the first schools to offer History of Art, our curriculum sends pupils on a diverse journey across different periods. It examines influential movements, artists, and masterpieces, giving a comprehensive historical and cultural perspective.

In-depth analyses of styles, techniques, and themes develop critical thinking and interpretation skills. It also reveals the link between art and literature, philosophy, and politics. Through research, discussions, and visual analysis, pupils grasp the evolution of art and its profound impact.
