Modern Foreign Languages

In today’s interconnected world, the value of languages is greater than ever. We offer French, German and Spanish as our core languages. Italian is available at the beginner level in the sixth form in the IB.

Pupils can also take Modern Greek, Mandarin, Turkish, and Russian in public examinations. With steady guidance, our pupils become proficient linguists with great cultural awareness.

Beyond classroom borders

With our team of native and non-native language experts, pupils engage in conversational classes that promote fluency and cultural understanding.

We host regular events such as pétanque and tapas evenings, song and film events, and theatre visits to enrich pupils’ cultural appreciation. We also offer trips abroad at key stages of pupils’ learning.

Essay writing competition

Meanwhile, many of our pupils participate in yearly translating and essay writing competitions. Pupils also benefit from our diverse foreign language resources, including a comprehensive language library and extensive online film collection.

Our language staff also curate music and podcast playlists to enhance pupils’ independent learning. In the sixth form, small classes ensure pupils receive personalised attention and support.

Furthermore, our correction periods and review clinics offer valuable support when needed.

Beyond Bryanston

Many of our pupils pursue courses that integrate a modern foreign language.

Subjects like history, economics, business, marketing, law and more can be combined with a modern foreign language. Graduates who have acquired an additional language typically have favourable employment prospects.

Some common career paths include international relations, civil or diplomatic services, finance, banking, interpreting and translation, law, and engineering.

Mastering one or more languages can open doors to broader opportunities in the international job market, both in the UK and abroad.
