We aim to motivate pupils through applied Sport Science and Physical Education from Year 9 (D) to Upper Sixth (A2). Whilst we celebrate the distinct differences between sport and Physical Education, we work collaboratively to promote application of learning within the School’s games and wider co-curricular programme.
Located in the Sports Centre, our learning environment extends beyond the classroom, allowing pupils to rehearse and develop skills across different areas of the industry.
Pupils can work with physiotherapists, coaches and strength and conditioning specialists, enhancing their own physical performance.
Additionally, A Level and CTEC pupils benefit from an annual visit to the University of Bath, Human Performance Lab for physiological testing.
In Year 9 (D), our Physical Education and Wellbeing curriculum is designed to inspire pupils to engage with their own movements and decision-making, while developing skills and knowledge essential for success in GCSE PE and beyond.
The Core PE curriculum continues through Year 10 (C) and Year 11 (B), collaborating with the PSRE department to deliver engaging content aimed at fulfilling our purpose of developing a passion for lifelong physical activity.
GCSE Physical Education
At GCSE, we follow the OCR course which covers Human Physiology (30% of overall grade) and Sports Psychology (30% of overall grade). The course offers an opportunity for pupils to study Physical Education as a science whilst also rewarding practical ability in both team and individual sports. Pupils are assessed in three sports through its non-examined assessment which makes up the final 40% of the GCSE.
A Level Physical Education
At A Level we have a longstanding history of success in delivering the OCR course where pupils study Physiology and Biomechanics (30% of overall grade), Sports Psychology (20% of overall grade) and Socio-Cultural studies (20% of overall grade).
Pupils are assessed in performance/coaching in one sport (15% of overall grade) and complete a spoken assessment of performance (15% of overall grade) to complete the broad and stimulating course.
As an A Level science, Physical Education provides an outstanding opportunity for pupils to develop skills across the comprehensive specification ahead of undergraduate study at university or a career in the sports performance industry.
Cambridge Technical Sport and Physical Activity (Coaching)
In the Sixth Form, we offer CTEC Sport and Physical Activity (Coaching) as an alternative to A Level. Recognised by universities as equivalent to two A Levels, CTEC Sport offers a broad overview of the sports industry through practical learning and assessment.
A blend of examined components and practically assessed modules, CTEC sport teaches and rewards practical performance, coaching and written analytical skills.
