Spanish

It is estimated that 595 million people speak Spanish as either a first or second language. With such a global reach, understanding Spanish opens individuals up to a wealth of literature, films, and music, enabling pupils to expand their cultural and linguistic horizons.

Alongside our curriculum we offer exciting opportunities like residential trips and cultural events that enrich students' learning, language proficiency, and fluency.

Spanish trip to Salamanca 2020

Our residential trip to Salamanca

Pupils can stay with host families, enjoy authentic Spanish cuisine, and practise their conversational skills. This offers a linguistically immersive adventure.

To further encourage socialisation in Spanish, we host cultural events and activities such as Tapas, Spanish Karaoke, Salsa and Zumba.

Pupils also have the opportunity to watch Flamenco shows and explore the world of Spanish theatre.

We inspire independent learning through access to our Spanish library, online film catalogue, and curated music playlists and podcasts. These experiences ignite a genuine love of Spanish, deepening pupils’ connection to the language and culture.

Our Spanish curriculum at BRYANSTON

  • Spanish GCSE

Our Spanish GCSE course enables pupils to develop effective communication skills and gain a deep understanding of Spanish-speaking countries and communities.

Pupils explore themes such as Home and Abroad, Education and Employment, Personal Life and Relationships. They also study topics like The World Around Us, Social Activities and Fitness and Health.

We strive to provide a solid foundation for further study at A level and IB, empowering pupils to become confident linguists.

  • Spanish A Level

In the first year of the sixth form, we go into the Hispanic world’s social, artistic, and cultural tapestry. The second year dives deeper into regional identity, the Catalonian independence conflict, and 20th-century Latin American dictatorships.

Through literary works and Spanish films, our pupils analyse concepts, issues, and techniques to inspire a deeper understanding.

  • IBDP Spanish B (Higher or Standard Level)

This course aims to enhance learners’ linguistic competence. It equips them for future study, work, or leisure with growing intercultural understanding and appreciation.

Higher and Standard levels include Identities, Experiences, Human Ingenuity, Social Organisation, and Sharing the Planet. At the Higher Level, pupils will engage with two literary works in Spanish.

  • Beyond Bryanston

Spanish creates opportunities for a wide range of experiences, whether travelling and exploring Spanish-speaking countries or pursuing work opportunities abroad.

With a strong linguistic foundation and cultural understanding, our Spanish pupils follow diverse career paths. Some choose to further their academic journey by studying Spanish at university, going deeper into literature, linguistics, or international relations.

Other pupils have rewarding careers where their Spanish skills are highly valued – for example, in translation, international business, marketing, or tourism.
