A Level and IB Historians visit London to attend a seminar on Russian history

20 November 2024

On Friday 8 November, a group of pupils in Year 13 (A2) and IB Russian historians went to London to attend a seminar with a first-class line-up of leading experts on early twentieth century Russian history.

Highlights included Prof Lieven’s talk examining the final traumatic years of the Tsar’s regime placing it into a much wider context by comparing events in Russia with other European countries on the periphery. Whilst Prof Beer focused more on the political, economic, social and cultural revolutions under Stalin and the subsequent thaw under Khrushchev.

Our pupils also took advantage of walking through Parliament Square to discuss the various statues and debate the importance of using public spaces to educate and contextualise history.

In the History Department we cultivate a deep appreciation for the richness of the past, broaden historical knowledge and equip our pupils with the analytical tools to become critical thinkers.
