Last weekend, audiences were swept away into a whimsical world as Bryanston’s elite Nova Dance Company, joined by talented dancers from across the school, brought to life a contemporary reimagining of Alice in Wonderland. Over 90 pupils, from prep to senior, took part in a dazzling production that blended elements of Street, Jazz, Contemporary, Tap and Ballet.
Set in the present day, the narrative revolved around Alice’s courageous quest to rescue the White Queen while navigating personal challenges, including coping with the recent death of her father. The modern interpretation resonated with performers and the audience, poignantly capturing Alice’s emotional journey amongst the evolving world around her.
From energetic street numbers to elegant ballet routines, the dancers demonstrated the breadth of Bryanston’s dance training. The production featured a mix of solo performances and group pieces, all amplified by a spectacular set crafted by the Coade Hall team.
Leading the show were the 14 members of the Nova Dance Company, Bryanston’s elite ensemble of 15 to 18-year-olds who audition annually. Guest choreographer and performer Tanesha Bannerman-Williams worked closely with the Company to create three standout pieces, while performer Elliot Lucas offered final-week coaching that honed technique and stagecraft across the board.
Special recognition goes to Lucy G, who delivered an exceptional performance as Alice. Rarely leaving the stage, Lucy expertly mastered every dance style offered at Bryanston. Samantha O’Neill, Head of Dance, praised her commitment and skill, saying, “Lucy dedicated countless hours to perfecting her role and showcased the extraordinary breadth of dance talent we nurture at Bryanston.”
The production’s atmosphere was further elevated by superb technical elements. Angus M and Farley M, two A2 pupils, managed lighting and sound, skilfully highlighting the show’s eerie, fantastical elements.
Returning Old Bryanstonians described the performance as “just incredible.” Dance teachers Gemma Davis and Katherine Stauch also provided significant choreography and support, playing pivotal roles in bringing the production to life.
Head of Dance, Samantha O’Neill, said, “I couldn’t be prouder of what the students have achieved. The level of dance being performed with regards to technique and performance is just outstanding and the students are constantly raising the bar. We’re already planning next year’s production.”
The Bryanston Dance Show 2025 was a spectacular celebration of talent, dedication, and creativity. Anticipation is already building for the upcoming summer cabaret performance. Congratulations to everyone involved.
