Impressive Rowing Journey for Sam B

28 November 2024

Sam B in A3 (Year 12) has been making waves in rowing, taking a significant step forward in 2024 as a J16 by securing the crucial 7-seat position in Bryanston’s Boys’ First VIII. Over the past few months, his physical performances have shown consistent improvement and in October he achieved the required ergo score to qualify for the GB Rowing U19 Early Identification Trial held in Boston, Lincolnshire.

This 5km time trial, identifies young rowing talent and although Sam still has another year in the U19 category, the decision to attend this year would offer him valuable experience ahead of next year’s trials. Expectations were tempered, given most competitors are in their final year of U19 but Sam finished 138th from 212 starters. This performance demonstrates clear potential for the future, even if this marks a possible end of the trial process for this year.

Sam aspires to follow in the footsteps of OB Jamie Pollock, the first Bryanston pupil in over 30 years to reach the GB Final Trials. Jamie’s achievement in becoming the first Bryanston boy ever to be selected for the GB U19 World Rowing Championship Team, and securing 6th place globally in the coxless pair (GB’s best performance in this event for nearly 20 years), remains a source of inspiration and Sam is determined to make his mark in a similar way.

Sam’s rowing development is supported by Bryanston’s exceptional PSP (Performance Sports Programme), providing expert Strength and Conditioning coaching, state-of-the-art facilities, and a supportive environment to enhance his athletic skills and reach his individual goals. Currently, Sam trains 8-10 times per week as part of the senior squad, which comprises approximately 30 boys and girls. An additional 30 rowers participate in the U15 squad, reflecting the growing popularity of rowing at Bryanston. This expansion has enabled Bryanston to regularly field competitive racing boats for both boys and girls at local and national events.

Sam’s immediate goal is to reclaim his spot in Bryanston’s First Boys’ Crew, whether in a quad or an eight. The team’s broader ambition is to qualify for the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta at the end of the summer term. Before that, a strong performance at the National Schools’ Regatta – one of the season’s key events – is also a primary objective.

Head of Rowing, Richard Boulton, said, “With his talent and dedication to Bryanston’s rowing programme, Sam is well-positioned to achieve his goals and continue his upward trajectory in the sport. His journey is one to watch, as he builds on his potential and follows in the footsteps of those Bryanston rowers who have set the standard before him.”
