National Science Week at Bryanston

28 March 2025

To mark British Science Week (7-16 March), our Science Department organised a number of initiatives (aptly named ‘BrySci Week’!) to celebrate science, technology, engineering and maths for pupils across all year groups.

  • More than 50 Year 10 (C) pupils attended a science conference
  • All of Year 9 (D) pupils took part in a STEM Challenge
  • The opportunity to enter our photography competition, ‘Adapt and Change’
  • Writing articles, creating artwork and composing poetry for the BrySci Magazine featuring and celebrating pupil work.

C Year Science Live Trip

Fifty of our top C scientists embarked on an inspiring trip to the Science Live conference in Bath – a unique opportunity to hear from some of Britain’s top scientists and to dive into the world of cutting-edge discoveries.

The day was packed with talks, and eye-opening insights from five leading experts in their fields. There were also exclusive insights from an experienced GCSE chief examiner, offering valuable advice on mastering exams.

D Year STEM Challenge Afternoon

Over 90 of our enthusiastic D Year pupils dived headfirst into an action-packed STEM Challenge afternoon, to celebrate Science Week. Working in teams, pupils faced a series of challenges designed to test their problem-solving skills, creativity, and teamwork.

They cracked codes to unlock a mystery box, built the tallest marshmallow and spaghetti tower, designed and launched paper airplanes, created boats to hold the most weight, mixed chemicals to make rainbows, used iPads to capture images reflecting the theme ‘adapt and change’, and got soaking wet transferring water between buckets in a timed challenge. Photography competition

We launched a photography competition, ‘Adapt and Change’, open to pupils in all year groups. The competition offered pupils the opportunity to develop their photography skills and express their vision of change. Pupils were encouraged to explore how people, nature and places transform – whether through the changing seasons, animals adapting to their surroundings, or the way cities evolve. The winning photographs from the competition feature in our BrySci Magazine.

Head of Science Abigail Elliot, commented: “A huge thank you to all the pupils for their enthusiasm, creativity, and energy, which made this year’s event such a great success! Thanks also to all of our amazing Science staff for bringing academics to life with these fun experiments and inspiring our young pupils in the world of science.”
