A new adventure awaits all our children in Years 1 and 2 at Bryanston Prep.
These exciting years are packed with hands-on activities where young learners continue to improve their academic, social, and creative skills.
Situated within the familiar environment of the Pre-Prep school, the children in Year 1 and 2 extend their learning from their Reception year and start to engage in more teacher-led and focused classroom learning.
Our work
Expectations are raised as the children move into Year 1 and 2. Through encouragement, collaborative learning and a strong relationship between teacher and parent, our children flourish as their learning gathers momentum.
Children engage in reading activities daily within the classroom from phonics to word games, digital apps and resources as well as reading stories, poems and instructions.
They become confident with the features and style of each through exploration and adaptation of these carefully-selected texts, which seek to capture and ignite their vivid imagination.
Across the year, the children apply their writing skills to create a range of items – from books and posters, to songs and plays.
Making maths fun
Maths skills and times tables are learnt through rhymes and games ensuring a rich and secure understanding of their numbers are gained through real and hands-on experiences.
Written challenges are introduced as well as mental tests for number counting, shape, time, money, measures and multiplication to secure their learning.
Prepared and excited
Children in Year 1 and 2 start to have regular lessons with specialist teachers, and mix more with older children in the main Prep School. This helps the children get used to moving around the school and becoming familiar with different environments.
Year 2 pupils are given regular opportunities to join our Year 3 class for lessons, preparing them for their crucial next step into Year 3. By the time they finish Year 2, our children are ready, prepared and excited to start their Year 3 adventure.
Preparing for Year 3
The transition from Year 2 to Year 3 can seem like quite a big jump. However, at Bryanston Prep we put many steps in place to ensure this is a seamless process for both the children and their parents.
Throughout Years 1 and 2, our children are encouraged to become increasingly independent in every aspect of school life, and given a growing number of responsibilities in the classroom and throughout the Pre-Prep.
Children are also encouraged to take greater responsibility for their personal possessions and ensure they have the correct equipment for the activities they undertake, such as in games, gym, instrumental lessons and riding.
