Pastoral Care

Core Principles

Our pastoral care ensures pupils at Bryanston Prep thrive in all areas of school.

The wellbeing of pupils is paramount, with pastoral care at the very foundation of a child’s ability to be happy and confident across all areas of school, friendships, and life in general.

Our Tutor Programme

Every child belongs to a tutor group and is the first line of support for all pupils. Tutors help children to foster a group identity and many activities in school happen in these groups.

All pupils from Years 3 to 5 have a form tutor who will take time to learn about your child’s likes, dislikes, strengths, and areas where they would benefit from extra encouragement and help.

As class sizes are small, the form tutor will get to know your child very well.

Weekly one-to-ones

For pupils in Years 6, 7, and 8, we operate a one-to-one tutorial system. Each pupil is carefully matched to their tutor and the relationship lasts for the duration of the pupil’s final three years at Bryanston Prep.

During weekly meetings, the tutor guides each tutorial pupil in becoming responsible for their own learning and discusses their wellbeing and progress. They help pupils to plan and manage their deadlines and priorities across the week and encourage independence. At all times, they act as each pupil’s champion and advocate.

Our goal is to equip pupils with a confidence built not only upon academic achievement, but also upon values and a raft of personal skills and qualities, as well as with an ability to contribute positively to society.

The tutorial system helps to foster these skills and qualities. Parents are also encouraged to contact their child’s one to one tutor to share concerns, ask questions or celebrate successes.

Tracking pupil wellbeing

We use an online platform called STEER to track pupil wellbeing.  Pupils answer questions about their school and home space, and our staff produce action plans to follow up pupils who are flagged by their data.

STEER does not replace warm connections with staff, but it does supplement the picture of a child built by form tutors and one to one tutors.

Pupil Voice

Every child has a voice at Bryanston Prep and we have carefully creed structures within which our pupils feel comfortable to share their thoughts and feelings.

  • School Council

We have an active school council, who meet regularly to discuss various topics within the school.  All year groups are represented on the school council and the items highlighted and raised are then discussed by our Senior Leadership Team

  • Prefects

Prefects are selected from Year 8, with a vigorous interview process in the summer term of Year 7. They are appointed to represent all areas of the school including wellbeing, Pre-Prep, events, sports and boarding.

The prefects meet regularly with the Head to talk about new ideas, areas for improvement and their role.

  • Form Captains

Every class at Bryanston Prep has a Form Captain, voted for by the children each term. All children can put themselves up to be a Form Captain by taking part in a short presentation outlining what they will bring to the role.

This is an experience that children throw themselves into, gaining confidence, improving self-esteem, and giving them a sense of duty and pride at representing their class.

For those not wanting to put themselves forward for Form Captain, we still make sure this process is a fun and inclusive learning experience for all.

  • The Independent Listener

We benefit from an Independent Listener who comes into school twice a term – although she is available at any time should your child require her. From posters around the school, all our children know how they can contact our Independent Listener. To check in, in person, she regularly visits the school.
