Safeguarding

Safeguarding our pupils’ physical, mental, emotional and social well-being is at the heart of all we do.

Safeguarding

We promote a school-wide culture that respects and adheres to the highest standards of safeguarding principles.

To guarantee the effective implementation of these standards, we focus on training our staff, ensuring:

  • Every member of Bryanston knows our safeguarding guidelines and can enforce them
  • Every pupil feels secure, both emotionally and physically, and is shielded from any form of abuse
  • Every pupil is educated on personal safety and learns to maintain their health and well-being.
  • Our procedures swiftly address concerns, offering comprehensive support whenever necessary
  • Bryanston adheres to stringent recruitment procedures, ensuring all our staff members are vetted for their suitability to work with young people

In collaboration with relevant external agencies and experts, we routinely evaluate and refine our safeguarding policies. These measures are tailored to comply with the standards set by the Independent School Standards Regulations, National Minimum Standards for Boarding, and other prevailing best practices.

Safeguarding practices

Our safeguarding is not merely a checklist of policies and procedures. Rather, it is how these policies are integrated into daily life that matters.

When executed well, safeguarding practices and a positive culture not only become second nature, but they also lie at the core of every decision we make.

Our Deputy Head Pastoral, Claire Miller, has overall responsibility for safeguarding. She oversees the safeguarding strategies for both the Prep and Senior school. Claire is supported by our Safeguarding Governor Jeanine Roderick, who has over 30 years professional experience in safeguarding.

The safeguarding team comprises eight safeguarding professionals including Richard Smallbone who was the DSL for the Rugby Football Union.

Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE)

We believe in the inherent right of every child to be shielded from all forms of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and violence, in line with KCSIE and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

We encourage any member of the Bryanston community who wishes to report instances of harm, abuse, neglect, or any form of misconduct to step forward without hesitation.

Creating a safe culture

To make sure everyone at Bryanston is safe, we have:

  • Clear safety and behaviour rules
  • Created a special team focused on safety and safeguarding
  • Defined clear roles for people in charge of pupil life, safety, well-being, and pupil voice.
  • Used the MyConcern system so you can report problems securely.
  • Boosted our counselling and support services in both the Medical Centre and in our pastoral approach.
  • Set up an online platform for pupils called Whisper: a confidential portal that gives pupils the confidence to speak up and reach out

Janine Roderick, one of our governors with over 30 years of experience in safeguarding, oversees the schools approach.
