The Tutorial System

tutorial system

The School’s core strength lies in its tutorial system.

The word tutor derives from Latin, and its original meaning included protection, guardianship and watching over someone. Our tutors fulfil these roles, in addition to the more obvious modern, academic sense of the word.

Before arriving at Bryanston, each pupil is thoughtfully matched with a personal tutor based on insights gained during the admissions process about the pupil’s interests and character. Tutor and pupil will remain together throughout the student’s time here – and so each tutor will be there to watch over the academic development of their charges from start to finish, and also their personal development.

Considering what happens in the years the pupil is here – intellectual and physical growth, academic and extra-curricular success – none of which ever goes to plan, or without a hiccup – the tutor’s job is vital.

Pupils with tutor

It’s a difficult but deeply rewarding role

It is nothing less than to guide each child towards the adult they are capable of being – educated, informed, considerate, self-motivated, imaginative, creative, with a command of their chosen academic subjects, plus whatever other accomplishments they have chosen from the myriad on offer here.

Our tutors are all teachers here, but alongside their subject expertise they are trained and guided themselves in the art and science of tutoring the growing human mind and body.

Close connection

It’s a testament to their success that many of our pupils remain close friends with their tutors long after they leave the school.

Weekly one-on-one meetings between tutors and pupils prioritise tailored care and support. These sessions allow pupils to discuss their studies, workload management, extra-curricular commitments, achievements, aspirations, challenges and concerns.

As trust between pupil and tutor deepens, pupils view their tutors as sounding boards, seeking guidance on curriculum choices, advice on university applications, and overcoming issues and challenges.

This close connection between tutor and pupil is what makes Bryanston School unique.
