Kayak success at National Schools Kayak Championships
Bryanston kayakers were at the National Schools Kayak Championships at Dreadnought Reach last Sunday.
It is always a large event and this year 30 crews entered from schools such as Kimbolton, The Royal Hospital School, Lord Wandsworths College and Cranleigh. Most of the crews were sixth form pupils and many had at least one Devizes to Westminster race under their belts, so our boys were competing in an experienced field.
Tom Else and Inigo Hawkings came 5th in the 200m sprint, with team mates Gus Griffiths and Henry Ward unfortunately not making the final following a collision in the third round of heats. However they fared much better in the 500m sprint, placing 2nd with Tom and Inigo managing to secure 6th.
The afternoon saw the hard-fought 15km marathon event, with Tom and Inigo placed 10th overall. Gus and Henry performed magnificently, taking the lead in the first lap and doggedly holding on to the very end, winning the race and the coveted National Schools Marathon Trophy.
Congratulations on an outstanding performance from two young crews against strong competition.
