Lessons from Auschwitz
Bryanston pupils have been taking part in the Lessons from Auschwitz project, organised by the Holocaust Education Trust (HET), for a number of years. This year’s participants not only shared their experiences with the school in assembly, but also created a moving, interactive art installation.
As part of the Lessons from Auschwitz project the pupils, Tazu and Ollie, heard the testimony of a Holocaust survivor, visited Auschwitz-Birkenau and shared their reflections with the rest of the school in a moving assembly towards the end of the summer term.
In addition, they created an interactive art installation to commemorate the child victims of the Holocaust by planting a bare branch in the Main Hall. Tazu and Ollie asked staff and fellow pupils to pause as they passed the memorial tree and to tie to the tree a piece of paper with the name and age of a child victim on it. The tree started out bare and within a few days was filled with leaves of white paper, bringing home the scale of the Holocaust and encouraging others to engage with the topic.
